Defining Inbound Routing Options
Previous  Top  Next

Refer to the additional document FACSys 5.0 Enterrpise Routing for more information.

Depending on the routing capabilities of your fax board, you can configure the following routing methods:

Direct inward dial (DID)
- If your environment supports DID hardware, FACSys will deliver a fax as defined by the user or group DID identification. See below for more information on DID.

Dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF)
- If your environment supports the DTMF hardware, FACSys will deliver a fax as defined by the sender's DTMF identification. See below for more information on DTMF dialing.

Line (channel) routing - FACSys can also deliver faxes according to the channel on which they are received. Inbound faxes can be routed to a specific FACSys user, group or to a network printer. See below for more information on Line routing.

Routing Options

Enable line routing on this device - FACSys can also deliver faxes according to the channel on which they are received. Inbound faxes can be routed to a specific FACSys user, group or to a network printer. To define line or channel routing for the device, check the 'Enable line routing' option and associate the device with a FACSys user or user group.

Override other routing methods on this device - Enabling this option instructs FACSys to ignore any other routing methods you may have defined, such as DID/DNIS and DTMF.

Route to user profiles - To associate the device or channel with a particular FACSys user/group, click the Modify button and select the FACSys user/group from the list. When a fax is received on the line, it will be routed to the associated user/group. If there is no association for the line, then the fax will appear in the "Unrouted" folder of the user(s) responsible for routing unassigned faxes.

Use the following number of digits when routing – Used to define the number of routing digits to be used.

Enable DTMF tone detection on this device – Used to enable DTMF tone detection on the device.

Allow ### seconds to each digit and ### for all digits – Used to set the tone intervals for DTMF routing.

Notes:

·To configure the DTMF settings properly, you must refer to the sending fax machine's documentation. You need to determine the correct settings for tone intervals and termination codes. This information will vary with every fax machine manufacturer and model.

·  The device you are configuring must support DTMF tone detection.

If all other routing options fail (e.g., FACSys cannot route an inbound fax according to DID/DNIS, DTMF or CSI), then FACSys will use the line routing options you define here.

Configuring a Board for DID/DNIS Routing

Because the technology is seamless and secure to the sender and the recipient, Direct Inward Dialing (DID) (Analog telephony) (also known as DNIS or Dialed Number Identification Service in Digital telephony) is generally viewed as the best routing choice. DID/DNIS consists of one or more trunk lines between a telephone company's central office (CO) and a customer's location. This is accomplished by the addition of specific DID/DNIS equipment at the PBX and assigning a block of telephone numbers to a set of telephone lines. For example, 100 different telephone numbers may be assigned to only 10 physical telephone lines. Users are then assigned unique DID/DNIS numbers. Typically, the last few digits in the dialed number provide the information needed to route the call to the proper extension.

The general steps for configuring FACSys for DID/DNIS routing are the following:
  1. In the FACSys Administrator device's Properties dialog box on the Routing tab (see above), define the number of routing digits to be used.
2. To configure DID/DNIS routing to a FACSys user, enable inbound routing in the user's FACSys profile and enter the routing identification on the General tab.
 3. To configure DID/DNIS routing to a FACSys user group, enable inbound routing to the group and enter the group's routing identification code in the group Properties dialog box on the Routing tab.
 4. When configuring a route with DID/DNIS do not enable DTMF routing.

Caution(s) for DID/DNIS Routing:

1. No outgoing calls can be placed on a DID trunk (Analog). In the Device Properties window on the General tab, you should disable the option 'Allow outgoing faxes on this device.'

2. The device you are configuring must support DID/DNIS routing.

3. To obtain the settings you need to define your DID/DNIS setup, you must contact your telephone company as well as refer to the device manufacturer instructions. For the FACSys configuration, you need to know the number of digits required in the DID/DNIS route code.

Configuring a Board for DTMF Routing

With Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) routing, each dialed digit is represented by two tones to provide protection against false digits appearing during transmission due to noise. In respect to faxing, DTMF means that the sender of the fax must enter additional numbers (i.e., the recipient's fax extension number) when prompted by the receiving fax machine or device. Because there must be some coordination between the sender and the recipient, this routing mode is not as popular as DID/DNIS.

The general steps for configuring FACSys DTMF routing are the following:

1. In the FACSys Administrator device's Properties dialog box on the Routing tab (see above
), define the number of routing digits to be used. (see Use the following number of digits when routing)

2. For every FACSys user that has a DTMF identification, enable inbound routing to the user and enter the user's routing ID in their FACSys user profile on the General tab
.

3. To configure DTMF routing to a FACSys user group, enable inbound routing to the group and enter the group's routing identification code in the group Properties dialog box on the Routing tab
.

Caution(s) for DTMF Routing:

1. To configure the DTMF settings properly, you must refer to the sending fax machine's documentation. You need to determine the correct settings for tone intervals and termination codes. This information will vary with every fax machine manufacturer and model.

2. The device you are configuring must support DTMF tone detection.

Configuring a Board for Line Routing

To define line or channel routing for the device, check the 'Enable line routing on this device' option. (see above
)

To associate the device or channel with a particular FACSys user/group, click the Modify button and select the FACSys user/group from the list.

When a fax is received on the line, it will be routed to the associated user/group.

If there is no association for the line, then the fax will appear in the "Unrouted" folder of the user(s) responsible for routing unassigned faxes.
