Testing Your Routing Rules

To test the route addressing rule, choose the Tools | Test Route command.

The Facsys Administrator's Test Routing tool will test a dial string according to the routing rules defined for the fax server. The tool will apply the rules that pertain to the test dial string and display the routing action that would be performed by the fax server.

Dialing Rules and Tips

The proliferation of cell phones, pagers and wireless devices has put severe pressure on the phone system's ability to manage a finite number of phone numbers. Facsys provides tools to assist Administrators to manipulate the phone number dialing strings to what is need in the local calling area. Doing this, one by one in the Facsys routing table, is cumbersome.

Create one rule

Export the rule to an Excel spreadsheet with a csv extension. See also: Exporting Data

Massage/copy/modify the data in Excel for the other routing rules needed. (ie. In some cities the same area code could have both long distance and local exchanges from your local dialing area. You need to create a series of rules to include or exclude the long distance (or local) exchanges from your table. (We suggest you include or exclude the suite of numbers with the least number of offending exchanges). Once the Excel data has been created, import it back in to Facsys. See also: Importing Data

TIP: In many parts of the world, the phone company requires its users to include the area code, and sometimes the leading "1" (country code) for their local interstate calls. When entering a fax number, either in the To field on the scheduler or in the Facsys phonebook, the 1 and area code must be included. The country code is compared to the entry for the country code in the dialing properties to determine if it needs to include the interstate or international dialing prefix. In the United States and Canada, the country code and interstate dial prefix are both "1".

If your fax server is located in an area that needs to include the area code and omit the 1, you will need to setup a few routing rules in the Facsys Administrator.

There are two different variations:

Include the area code without the "1" for all calls within your area code; or
Only include the "1" when the call is considered a long distance call in your area code. In both cases you will need to setup two routing rules.

10 Digit Dial for all calls in your area code:

This is done in the Facsys Administrator program by right-clicking on Routing in the left column, and select add rule.

Rule 1: canonical

Enter your area code in a canonical format in the address field, and enable the "remove" N characters from the left. Set the value of N to 3.

Example:

Address +1 (215)*

Remove 3 characters from the left; the +, 1, and space.

Rule 2: non-canonical

For non-canonical format you need to add another rule to accommodate them:

Example:

Address 1215*

Remove 1 character from the left

10 Digit Dial for local calls in your area code:

This is done in the Facsys Administrator program by right clicking on Routing in the left column, and select add rule.

NOTE: In creating a rule for all calls or local calls you will need to implement both the canonical and non-canonical rules.
