Server Farms General Properties

Server Farms are a collection of Facsys Servers that can access information in a "common" SQL Database. They can be used for Failover (by monitoring each other), as well as load balancing (using the Routing Tab on the Server Farm Connection)

When multiple faxservers are being used in an environment, outbound routing can be done based on the load placed on a particular server. To do this, connections are setup between the servers. Then, using the general tab and the routing tab, specific criteria can be set for the connection.

Scenario:

  • Alpha, Bravo and Charlie are three servers in a server farm.
  • There are connections set up on Alpha to Bravo and Charlie.
  • There are also connections set up on Bravo to Alpha and Charlie.
  • Also, on Charlie there are connections between Bravo and Alpha.
  • If Bravo is experiencing a very heavy load of outgoing faxes, the connection to Alpha could be used to "lighten the load". This can be done by setting the options on the routing tab. By defining the number of recipients, the number of pages, or the number of fax messages pending, connections to other servers can be used.

Connection Information

  • Server name: Enter the computer name of the remote server. This can be done by IP address, FQDN, or NetBIOS name

  • Display Name: Enter the name to be displayed in the Facsys Administrator for this connection.

  • Cost value associated with this connection: Enter a relative cost to be assigned to the connection. This only applies when there is more than one way to connect to the remote server - eg. via a dialup, corporate WAN, T1, and/or frame-relay connection. If more than one connection can be used to send a fax, the connection with the lower cost value will be used.

Connection Options

  • Allow messages to be sent on this connection: Enabling this option allows faxes to be sent from this connection.

  • Allow messages to be received on this connection: Enabling this option allows faxes to be received from this connection.

  • Disable this connection and ignore when routing: For testing purposes many Facsys administrators may disable connections to servers that are "off-line". By selecting this option, a connection can be taken "off-line" until the receiving faxserver comes back on-line. That way, all connection properties can be maintained.
